Xbox boss, Phil Spencer has dropped a new hint at Xbox Handheld in a recent interview, saying "I Think We Should Have A Handheld."
Xbox Boss Drops Hint at Xbox Handheld |
In the midst of the excitement surrounding Microsoft's recent Xbox Games Showcase, Xbox head Phil Spencer dropped some tantalizing hints about the future of Xbox hardware, Xbox Handheld.
While the showcase featured a plethora of game announcements and three new series consoles, the much-rumored Xbox Handheld was notably absent. However, Spencer's comments in a subsequent interview with IGN have reignited speculation about this potential new device, suggesting that the idea of an Xbox handheld is very much alive and potentially on the horizon.
Xbox Handheld Hints By Phil Spencer
Phil Spencer has been subtly hinting at the possibility of an Xbox handheld for months. Earlier this year, he expressed his fondness for handheld gaming devices, liking posts on X (formerly Twitter) that mentioned the potential for an Xbox handheld. In his recent interview with IGN, Spencer gave his most explicit hint yet, stating, "I think we should have a handheld, too."
Spencer emphasized the exciting future for Xbox hardware, mentioning the team's work on different form factors and ways to play. While the recent showcase focused primarily on games, Spencer assured fans that more information about new platforms would be revealed in due time.
Spencer told IGN, “The future for us in hardware is pretty awesome. The work that the team is doing around different form factors, different ways to play, I’m incredibly excited about. Today was about the games… but we will have a time to come out and talk more about platform, and we can’t wait to bring it to you."
One of the critical aspects of the rumored Xbox handheld is whether it would rely solely on cloud streaming or allow for local gameplay, and when asked about the same, Spencer highlighted the importance of local play, referencing his positive experiences with devices like the ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and Steam Deck.
"I think being able to play games locally is really important," he said, suggesting that the Xbox handheld could offer more than just cloud-based gaming.
Spencer's comments have also led to speculation that the Xbox handheld might be a Windows-based device capable of running Xbox games with a familiar console interface. Earlier this year, in an interview with Polygon, Spencer mentioned his desire for a compact Xbox mode on a handheld gaming PC, allowing it to boot into the Xbox app in full screen but in a more portable form.
Such a device would require Microsoft to merge Xbox and Windows in a way that hasn't been done before, creating a seamless experience for users who want to switch between Xbox games and other PC games. This hybrid approach seems increasingly likely, given the convergence of PC and console gaming in the Xbox ecosystem.
Now, although there's no official timeline for the release of an Xbox handheld, Spencer's refusal to deny its existence suggests that it's only a matter of time before more concrete details emerge. In the meantime, fans can look forward to more information from Microsoft as they continue to innovate and expand the Xbox platform.
