Arkane Austin Was Working On Major Redfall Update |
Microsoft is closing down several studios under ZeniMax Media, which will have a significant impact on the Xbox first-party group's Bethesda Softworks publishing division. Among those affected are Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks in Japan, and Alpha Dog Games in Canada. And now new reports indicate that Arkane Austin, one half of Arkane Studios based in Austin, Texas, USA, was actively working on a major update for Redfall before its closure on May 7.
Arkane Austin Was Working On Major Redfall Update Before Studio Closure - Report
According to IGN, Arkane Austin had been busy developing DLC and various patches for Redfall, scheduled for release in 2024. The studio had planned an update for May that aimed to remove the game's always-online requirement, along with other enhancements. Arkane Austin originally promised this feature in March 2023, however, it hasn't been released as of yet, and now that it isn't happening, gamers will presumably only be able to play Redfall until Bethesda and Microsoft determine it's time to shut down the servers for the game.
Also, another Redfall update was supposed to be released in May and was intended to introduce an offline mode, ensuring the game could still be enjoyed in the future even after the servers were deactivated. However, unfortunately now this patch will not be released.
Additionally, an update slated for Halloween was supposed to introduce two new characters to the game as part of the Hero Pass. However, this update, along with any future support for Redfall, has been canceled. Players who purchased the Hero Pass will be eligible for a refund for the content that will no longer be delivered.
While Microsoft and Bethesda have not provided further comments on the matter, an email sent to staff on May 7 by Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, attributed the studio closures to a "reprioritization of titles and resources." However, the email confirmed that Redfall's servers will continue to be accessible, stating "Arkane Austin has a history of making impactful and innovative games and it is a pedigree that everyone should be proud of."
However, there are now concerns about the future playability of Redfall, given its reliance on always-online connectivity, which may pose issues if Microsoft makes a decision to shut down its servers.
