Rumor has it that the team in charge of developing the next generation of Xbox consoles is not the same one that developed the Xbox Series X|S and other previous consoles.
Surface Team Might Lead Development of Next Gen-Xbox Console |
According to insights shared on the XboxERA podcast, it's been mentioned that Jason Ronald, who played an important role in previous Xbox console creations, including the Xbox Series X|S, is not heading the development of the next generation of Xbox consoles. Instead, the Surface team is reportedly taking the lead in this venture.
The revelation about the Surface team's involvement was discussed during the podcast, with @Shpeshal_Nick expressing surprise upon hearing the news. While the sources of this information remain unspecified, he said, "I’ve heard the surface team as well. That’s why I freaked out when I heard Mag mention Jason Ronald not leading the next Xbox because I heard the exact same thing."

It's important to note that the nature of the next-gen Xbox console, whether it's a traditional home console or a handheld device, remains uncertain. The Surface team's involvement, however, has sparked speculations that Microsoft might be delving into the handheld gaming market with its next major Xbox release.
Although these rumors lack official confirmation and should be taken with a grain of salt, they align with recent online discussions. Last week, rumors circulated about a handheld SKU for the next-generation Xbox, that will support cloud gaming in addition to running games natively.
So, if the rumors turn out to be true and if the Surface team actually becomes the sole force behind the entire system, in that case, the other SKU, which is rumored to be a conventional home console in the style of the Xbox Series X may get impacted.
Currently, we know that Microsoft is scheduled to make an announcement this week regarding its immediate plans for the Xbox franchise as there were several rumors and speculations about first-party Xbox games making their way to other platforms. So it's possible that this event may also shed light on the direction the company is taking with the next-generation Xbox, providing clarity on the anticipated console's leadership, design, and potential features.
But as with any rumors, it's a waiting game until official information is shared by Microsoft.
