Recently, there has been talk online about a possible revival or reboot of the series. This speculation has now turned into reality with the confirmation of a pilot order. This decision aligns with Disney Branded Television's goal of strengthening Disney Channel's lineup with multi-camera sitcoms.
The storyline, as per Deadline, centers around a mysterious event at WizTech, where adult Justin Russo has given up his wizard powers for a human life.
However, things take an unexpected turn when a young and powerful wizard, played by Janice LeAnn Brown, seeks Justin's guidance. The plot promises a journey of self-discovery and the importance of reconciling with the past to secure the Wizard World's future.
The cast includes Alkaio Thiele as Justin's eldest son and Mimi Gianopulos as Justin's wife. The pilot is directed by executive producers Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, known for their work on the Disney sequel series Raven's Home.
"The Wizards of Waverly Place" was created by Todd J. Greenwald, and originally aired from 2007 to 2012. The show followed the Russo family, three siblings mastering their magical abilities while dealing with the challenges of adolescence. The main cast, including Jake T. Austin, Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals-Barrera, and David DeLuise, reunited for a 2013 TV special titled "The Wizards Return: Alex Vs. Alex."
Selena Gomez, who was part of the original cast, is currently involved in the Disney family. She stars in and executive produces the popular Hulu/20th TV comedy series "Only Murders In the Building." Other original cast members, such as Jake T. Austin, Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals-Barrera, and David DeLuise (excluding Henrie), are also set to return.
Gomez and Henrie will not only star in the sequel series but also work as executive producers, marking a special reunion for the former co-stars.
