CD Projekt Red, renowned for its captivating RPGs, has shared updates on the upcoming Witcher game - Project Polaris, and the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 - Project Orion.
Witcher 4 will enter full production and Cyberpunk 2 is still in the conceptual phase |
Joint CEO Adam Badowski in a recent interview informed that they aim to start the production phase of The Witcher 4, codenamed Polaris, this year. Simultaneously, the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, known as Project Orion, is in the conceptual design phase, with approximately 80 individuals expected to work on it by year-end. Keep on reading to know the details.
The Witcher 4 - Project Polaris:
Adam Badowski, CEO of CD Projekt Red, disclosed to Reuters that Project Polaris, the official title for the next Witcher game, is set to enter full production this year.
The company aspires to assemble a team of about 400 individuals working on The Witcher 4 by mid-year. "[We] would like to have around 400 people working on the project [The Witcher 4] by the middle of the year," states Badowski of CD Projekt's RED studio. Having previously declared that the three titles in the upcoming Witcher trilogy would be released within a "six-year publishing window," it seems logical that the studio is trying to gather support to start fulfilling this commitment.
While details about The Witcher 4 remain scarce, it is confirmed to feature a new storyline and likely introduce new characters. Also, previously revealed details indicate that the open-world title is being made using Epic Games' Unreal Engine, deviating from the proprietary REDengine employed in prior Witcher games and Cyberpunk 2077.
In addition, as of last November, nearly 330 developers were dedicated to the project, making it CD Projekt's most substantial development team, surpassing that of Cyberpunk 2077. So as the production is increasing within the year at the very least, we'll probably get more news in a recent time, and some promotional materials in the future.
Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel - Project Orion:
Coming to the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 codenamed Project Orion, has been revealed to be currently undergoing conceptual design at CD Projekt's North American studios.
CEO Adam Badowski provided an update, stating that Project Orion is still in the conceptual phase, with an expectation of around 80 individuals contributing to the project by year-end. Additionally, joint CEO Michal Nowakowski stated that CD Projekt had been contemplating incorporating multiplayer components in the sequel.
CD Projekt team also acknowledged the use of AI in the development pipeline. However, any AI applications are expected to be behind-the-scenes enhancements, not visible to players. Nowakowski said, "We think that AI is something that can help improve certain process in game production, but not replace people."
It has been revealed that the company remains committed to learning from the challenges faced during the 2020 release of Cyberpunk 2077, emphasizing a more systematic and intelligent approach.
Originally planned as a standalone AAA Cyberpunk multiplayer game, the Cyberpunk 2077 follow-up, Project Orion, emerged after the scrappel of the initial multiplayer project. Furthermore, in March 2021, Adam Kiciński, the company's chief strategy officer and former CEO, stated, "Given our new more systematic and agile approach, instead of primarily focusing on one big online experience or game, we are focusing on bringing online into all of our franchises one day."
As of right now, we know very little about the upcoming Cyberpunk sequel. However, narrative director Philipp Weber of CD Projekt Red hinted last month that the game would have deeper branching storylines influenced by the player's chosen life path. Decisions on crucial gameplay elements, such as perspective (first or third-person), are still under consideration.
While fans of Cyberpunk still have a ways to go, fans of The Witcher can anticipate another thrilling adventure from CD Projekt Red soon.
