Sony Might be Developing a New DualSense Variant |
Starlight Blue, Nova Pink, and Galactic Purple are just a few of the new PS5 DualSense controller versions that Sony has already developed. At first, fans were impressed by the stylish looks of these new controllers, but now they are anticipating fresh hardware advancements. Now as per the recently surfaced patent data, it seems like Sony may be working on a new variant of the DualSense controller that might be able to selectively light up its button faces to provide signals about gameplay action.
Although there is no assurance that this product will be made available for purchase, its foundational technology holds the potential to increase PlayStation gaming accessibility.
Sony Might Be Developing A New DualSense Variant
According to a recently discovered DualSense controller patent, Sony has recently been experimenting with a more advanced DualSense gamepad that can light up its button faces to provide gameplay action cues.
A new DualSense controller patent was found on November 30th. |
The November 30th-secured patent proposes a predictive assistance system that uses a machine learning model to track a player's performance over time and identify when help may be needed. If it detects that the player is stuck, the experimental system will light up the controller's buttons to direct the player's attention toward it and provide a suggested next step. The controller's touchpad, which would also function as a display, would also have the button suggestions displayed.
Regarding the idea in question, the controller it proposes would be able to light up both of its analog sticks in addition to its buttons, including its shoulder triggers. However, this isn't the first time a patent hinted at a touchscreen on the DualSense 2, as a similar filing appeared in September, suggesting that the DualSense 2 would use a touchscreen rather than a touchpad.

Moreover, it is important to note that the patents don't guarantee actual products, especially considering Sony files numerous patents yearly. Out of nearly 1,400 patents submitted in 2022, many might never become products.
The updated DualSense controller was initially limited to the new colours. Nonetheless, throughout time, Sony made some little enhancements to every DualSense design, so it will be interesting to see how this new DualSense controller turns out, if and when it launches.
