Google has unveiled its lineup of the top 10 most searched video games for 2023, and leading the pack is Hogwarts Legacy, the open-world spin-off set in the Harry Potter universe.
Google's 10 most searched games in 2023 - Hogwarts Legacy takes first spot |
Google revealed its annual trending searches, and the titles that were in the top 10 in 2023 are hardly shocking. In addition to topics like celebrities, actors, films, TV series, singers, songs, and more, Google has revealed the most popular games in 2023. And obviously, we have The Last of Us and other major releases of the year trailed closely behind the magical role-playing game Hogwarts Legacy.
According to Google's data, the popularity of Hogwarts Legacy peaked in the first part of February, which makes sense given that the game was first launched on February 10, 2023, for the PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X.
After being launched on February 10, the game easily became the best-selling game in Europe in the first half of 2023. Then it had several ports during the year, including a Switch version in November and last-generation console versions released in May, which might have further fueled searches beyond the initial February surge.
In May, Warner Bros. said that the game had sold 15 million copies globally, in spite of a boycott by certain Harry Potter enthusiasts over public remarks made by author J.K. Rowling that were widely interpreted as transphobic.
The Last of Us also had a surge in popularity in 2023, most likely as a result of the success of the HBO TV version that debuted in January. The Last of Us was consequently the most searched TV series and the second-most Googled game of 2023.
The complete list of the top 10 most searched games in 2023 includes:
- Hogwarts Legacy
- The Last of Us
- Connections
- Battlegrounds Mobile India
- Starfield
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- スイカ ゲーム(Suika Game)
- Diablo IV
- Atomic Heart
- Sons of the Forest
Following Hogwarts Legacy, The Last of Us ranks as the second most searched game. Given The Last of Us TV series' top spot in the TV category, the game's newfound popularity doesn't come as a surprise.
Apart from the top 2, other notable entries in the top 10 include Bethesda's much-anticipated launch, Starfield (at number five), Baldur's Gate 3 (at number six) - especially unsurprising as it bagged Ultimate Game of the Year at The Golden Joystick Awards and GOTY at The Game Awards 2023 - Suika Game (at number seven), gaining massive traction among Vtubers in October, Diablo 4 (at number eight), and Sons of the Forest (at number 10).
The reason Suika Game, a mobile game, is on the list is probably because of its popularity in Japan as it was the top game in Japan in Google's data, with Hogwarts Legacy being in the second spot and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom being the third one.
Interestingly, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom didn't make it to the 10 most searched games in the 2023 list at all, a surprising omission considering its popularity. Last year's most Googled game, Wordle, also held the global number one spot in Google’s top 10 list of all search terms. This year, it appears that Connections, a game from The New York Times bearing similarities to the BBC game show Only Connect, has garnered more attention.
