Talking about Roger Goodell's extension as NFL Commissioner, the official announcement from the league stated, "The Compensation Committee updated the full ownership today that an agreement has been reached to extend Commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract for three years, through March 2027.
Reflecting on the extension process, Goodell remarked, "It really was quite simple, honestly. It was just a matter of getting to it, frankly. It wasn't much of a discussion. It was pretty quick. I'm obviously honored to do this job."
Roger Goodell's salary and total net worth
Goodell, who has held the position of NFL Commissioner since 2006, was supposed to get his contract ended by Spring 2024, however, with the new extension, Roger Goodell's salary will certainly improve.
Although financial details of the new agreement have not been disclosed, it's worth noting that for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, Goodell reportedly earned an annual salary of $63.9 million. When it comes to Roger Goodell's net worth, Front Office Sports reports that this latest deal will improve the American businessman's total career earnings to a remarkable $700 million.
The 64-year-old NFL commissioner boasts a long-standing history with the NFL, beginning as an administrative intern in 1982 under then-Commissioner Pete Rozelle. Under his guidance, the league has experienced unprecedented growth, with soaring popularity and revenue. This year, the Washington Commanders were sold for a staggering $6.05 billion, marking a new record.
This extension marks the fourth for Roger Goodell, who assumed the role on September 1, 2006, succeeding Paul Tagliabue. Previous extensions were granted in 2009, 2012, and 2017.
However, Goodell's career has not been without its challenges. He has gone through intense scrutiny and criticism surrounding the league's handling of off-field issues, including instances of domestic violence and the initial response to Colin Kaepernick's protest for social justice.
Goodell emphasized that this new contract will not alter his approach to the job, as he remains committed to executing the league's "long-range plan," which includes ambitions to become a global sport. In a historic move, American football is slated to feature in the 2028 Olympics, with flag football making its debut.
