Overwatch 2 Season 7 "Rise of Darkness" Launch Trailer Dropped
Overwatch 2 Season 7 battle pass, titled "Rise of Darkness," is launching on October 10. It introduces the Trials of Sanctuary mode, a Diablo 4-themed co-op survival mode pitting players against forces led by Lilith Moira, including Azmodan Wrecking Ball and Butcher Roadhog. The selectable heroes, such as Sombra, Zarya, Illari, Lifeweaver, Reinhardt, and Pharah, are all in Diablo-inspired attire.
For long-time fans, hero changes are a key focus. Mei is reverting to her previous kit without the Deep Chill passive, and Zarya's Projectile Barrier is partially reverted to prevent quicker energy build-up while still offering a faster cooldown. The most significant rework is for Sombra: Opportunist is replaced, Stealth becomes her passive ability granting invisibility and increased move speed when out of combat, Translocator now provides instant teleportation, and her new skill, Virus, deals damage over time with extra damage to hacked enemies.
A Roadhog rework is also planned for later in the season.

Complete Overwatch 2 SAMOA Revealed at OWL Finals
In Overwatch 2's Season 7, the developers are reinvigorating the classic Control mode, which hasn't seen much attention since the game's launch. They're introducing a new Control map called Samoa. This shift towards refining multiplayer experiences and maintaining balance updates led to a reduced focus on a full PvE campaign.
The new Samoa map features three distinct points: Beach, Downtown, and Volcano. The beach is set along the shore with villas and huts providing cover, while the control point is submerged, encouraging dynamic gameplay. Downtown channels players through narrow streets into a wide, open point with a central tower, drawing inspiration from Numbani in terms of verticality. Volcano, the final point, presents an open area, allowing for diverse combat styles.
All three unique points of the Overwatch 2 Samoa map were revealed at the OWL Finals |
There's speculation that Samoa could be a precursor to the introduction of Mauga, a hero anticipated for Season 8. This new map will be available on October 10 when Season 7 commences.

Overwatch 2 Season 7 Release Date
Typically, an Overwatch 2 season spans about 9 weeks. Given Season 6's start date, it's highly likely that OW2 Season 7 will commence on October 10, 2023. However, this date isn't set in stone and may be subject to change as more details emerge.
Overwatch 2 Season 7: New Map
Following Blizzard's seasonal update strategy, each new season is typically centered around either introducing a new Hero or a fresh map. Considering the recent introduction of a new Hero, Illari, it's probable that OW2 Season 7 will feature a new map. There's also talk of revisiting older maps like Hanamura, so keeping an eye on Blizzard's updates will be key.
Overwatch 2 Season 7 Reworks: Sombra and Roadhog
Blizzard is addressing balance issues with Sombra and Roadhog, two key heroes in Overwatch 2. Sombra's unique playstyle, particularly her Translocator ability, has posed balancing challenges. Roadhog, on the other hand, has faced criticism for his chain hook ability, which enables powerful combos. Hence some reworks are in the works for OW2 Season 7 to refine the heroes' gameplay experience.
For Roadhog, his existing abilities, including 'Chain Hook' and 'Take A Breather', will be retained post-rework. A new ability, yet to be revealed, will be added to his kit and the aim of Roadhog rework is to
- Increase his ability to protect his team and claim space
- Maintain his overall identity and playstyle
- Move some of his power around so that his effectiveness isn’t so tied to his one-shot potential
Sombra's changes are set to debut at the start of OW2 Season 7. The goals for Sombra's rework include
- Make Sombra more committal when engaging
- Increase the active feel throughout her kit
- Uphold her current hacker identity and playstyle
In the Director's Take, the devs revealed that in the coming weeks, we'll go into more detail on Sombra and Roadhog's changes, including a look at each character's new ability.

Overwatch 2 Season 7: Hero Buffs and Nerfs
Every Overwatch season brings a slew of buffs and nerfs, and OW2 Season 7 will be no exception. Sombra will undergo a substantial overhaul, promising a significant update for the Damage Hero. Other heroes like Orisa, Zarya, Mei, Torbjörn, and Illari are also set to see adjustments, ranging from damage reduction tweaks to changes in abilities.
Orisa
- Fortify damage reduction to be reverted or pulled back
Zarya
- Ally bubble size and health to be reduced
Mei
- Will no longer deep freeze enemies
Torbjörn
- Primary fire recovery time to be reverted or pulled back
Illari
- Secondary fire healing to be adjusted
Several buffs and nerfs are planned for Overwatch 2 Season 7 |
Any further significant changes that occur in Overwatch 2 Season 7 will also be posted here for you.
Overwatch 2 Season 7: New Lore Codex
The introduction of a Lore Codex in OW2 Season 7 promises a more streamlined approach to tracking Overwatch's ever-expanding lore.
This feature will serve as an archive for players to keep tabs on everything they've uncovered in the game. Whether it's secret items, weapons, new characters, or entire locations, this addition could further enrich the team-based shooter's setting and its main cast. Additionally, it's hinted that the new Lore Codex will include in-character emails and additional voice lines from Overwatch heroes.
Overwatch 2 Season 7 Events: New Collaborations
Following the success of the One-Punch Man event, Blizzard has announced another crossover event for Overwatch 2. This event is slated to take place in OW2 Season 7, commencing next month.
While details remain somewhat cryptic, further information is expected during BlizzCon. The One-Punch Man collaboration, featuring skins from the popular anime, was a notable hit, spanning an entire month. Fans can look forward to more details in the upcoming season's trailer, typically released a day to a week before the new season starts in October.
Overwatch 2 Season 7 roadmap |
That wraps up the major highlights for OW2 Season 7 and beyond. While a new Control map and the return of Competitive Mystery Heroes are confirmed, Blizzard has yet to unveil many specifics about their future plans. Nonetheless, players have plenty of content to explore before they begin anticipating Overwatch 2's next major release.
As for the next hero being a tank in Overwatch 2, speculation is high. Following the established release pattern, the next tank hero is expected to arrive in Season 8, likely in December. Speculation suggests it might be Mauga, a Samoan character teased in Baptiste's origin story. Mauga, described as a sociopathic heavy assault specialist, is known for his imposing presence and cruel nature. In official comics, he's seen wielding powerful arm cannons, potentially indicating ballistic or incendiary capabilities.
Overwatch 2's recent hero additions have showcased versatile roles, indicating that Mauga could bring substantial firepower to the game. Expect more updates as additional information on Overwatch 2's latest hero emerges.
